He enlisted in the Maine National Guard on February 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Rumford, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Leonard was "Killed In Action" in Luzon Island during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He also has a "Cenotaph" in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Old, Augusta, Maine.
