Walter the husband of Virginia G. Jones, loving father of Barbara L. Jones, the son of Walter C. Jones Sr. and Margaret H. Jones, dear brother of Stephan J. Jones of Garden City New York had enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 10 1964 in New York, NY. Having graduated from the Officers Candidate School in Quantico he received a commission as a 2d Lieutenant (Reserve). On extended active duty he arrived in Vietnam on July 4 1967 where he was assigned to and served with H&S Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In April, the Battalion was operating in northern Quang Tri Province in the Huong Hoa District and during Operation PEGASUS the unit was the first to move out to seize Hill 471 two kilometers south and Hill 552 two kilometers southwest of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. During the advance on their objectives the Marine were confronted the NVA in well prepared and concealed defensive positions, as well as supporting arms fire, rocket and artillery fire slowed their advance in the heavy mountainous terrain. During the first two days of fire fights thirteen men were killed in the battles with enemy forces and one of the casualties was Capt. Walter Jones who was with the Forward Air Control Team, killed by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.
