Sister Catherine C. "Paulina" Millard was the eleventh child of thirteen, of parents, Joshua and Ann Manning Millard, born in 1822, in Washington, D.C. She was probably baptized at St. Peter's Church in Washington and was educated at the Convent of the Visitation in Wasington.

Upon taking her final vows of a nun, she took her older sisters name of Pulina as her nuns name.

When she was ten years old her father died in Washington, 1 June 1832. When his estate was probated in 1836, Catherine was shown as being a minor under the guardansip of her mother.
