He arrived in Vietnam on April 19 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company K, 3d Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of May, the Battalion was operating in Quang Nam Province with Company I under the operational control of the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines participating on Operation ALLEN BROOK on Go Noi Island. On May 17, the Battalion was ordered into battle and would replace the 7th Marines who would pull back to their assigned area of responsibility and missions.

At 0700 hours of May 24 the Battalion moved from its night position towards Le Bac (1). As the Marines approached the hamlet they began to take sniper fire, until the lead elements were pinned down by heavy enemy fire in fortified positions. By afternoon the Marines withdrew from their advance to allow artillery and air strikes to pound the enemy positions. During the fire fights with the enemy, LCpl Ronald Shewman was one of the casualties; he was killed in action by hostile rifle fire.
