Gilbert (Giselbert) was born abt. 890 to Reginar, Duke of Lorraine (Lotharingia) and his wife, Hersinda. He became duke of Lorraine sometime after Reginar's death in 915, possibly as late as 928. In 925, he pledged fealty to King Henry the Fowler (Heinrich I) of Germany and married his daughter, Gerberga (Gerberge) of Saxony abt. 929/930. They had four children, Henry, Alberade, Hedewige and Gerberge. When Henry died in 936, Gilbert rebelled against his successor, Otto I, and aligned with Louis IV of France. He was defeated by Otto's forces at the Battle of Andernach in 939. Made prisoner, he escaped but drowned in the Rhine on Oct. 2, 939. His wife married Louis IV a few months later.
