U.S. Continental Congressman. After serving in the French and Indian War as a Captain in the Provincial Army until 1763, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Assembly (1767-73) and elected to the First Continental Congresses, serving (1774-75). After his term, he served again in the Pennsylvania State Assembly, in 1778. Relocating to Maryland, he lived in retirement until his death at age 41.
