Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Castel San Pietro Terme, Marcello Mimmi entered seminary in Bologna and was ordained priest there in December 1905. Longtime faculty member of the named seminary, where he was immediately assigned following his ordination, remaining up to 1930, he also served as rector of the Regional Seminary of Romagna. Elected bishop of the diocese of Crema, Mimmi received his episcopal consecration on July 25, 1930 at the metropolitan cathedral of Bologna. Promoted to metropolitan see of Bari on July 31, 1933, he was named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on December 6, 1936. Transferred to the metropolitan see of Naples on August 30, 1952, he took possession of the archdiocese on the following December 7. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953, with the title of San Callisto. Named secretary of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation on December 15, 1957, the Cardinal left the archdiocese and settled in Rome. Opting for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Sabina e Poggio Mirteto on June 9, 1958, he passed away of kidney complications following surgery for a perforated ulcer.
