Buel was the son of Roy E. Anderson. In 1940 Buel was living with his divorced mother, Effie Anderson, in Seymour, Texas. She worked as a seamstress. At the time of Buel's death Effie was living in Oklahoma and was Mrs. Bland. The following was published in The Baylor County Banner (Seymour, Texas), January 25, 1945:

"Mrs. Bland recently received the personal belongings of her son, Cpl. Buel Anderson, who was killed in action on Guam last year. She also received the Purple Heart that has been awarded her son posthumously. Cpl. Anderson, who had been on duty with the Marines for over two years, was reared in this county and attended the Seymour schools. He was a boy of high principles and was thought very highly of by all his associates. His friends here still grieve very much for the loss of this native son."

Most likely Mrs. Bland chose to bury her son in Riverview Cemetery because his maternal grandparents are buried in the cemetery.
