Actor. He is best known for his Silent Screen portrayals in the Golden Age of Movies. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden into a seafaring family, he worked as a gold engraver until he won a free scholarship to the Stockholm Dramatic Theater. Gaining prominence as a talented Shakespearean actor, in 1915 he made his mark in the Swedish cinema, appearing with Greta Garbo in the film "The Atonement of Gosta Berling." Hollywood movie producer Louis B. Mayer took notice of them, and in 1926 he made his American film debut as the "Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale" in "The Scarlett Letter," opposite Lillian Gish. He returned to Europe in the 1930s to star in more films there. He continued working on stage, but retired from movie-making in 1951. He married Swedish actress Karin Molander in 1922, and they remained married for 43 years, until his death, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden after a brief illness at age of 78.
