In 1860, he lived with his family in Metal Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg October 18, 1862, understating his age by three years, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 29 as a private with Battery C, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (112th Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery October 28, 1865.
He died at his home in Fannettsburg from "chronic diarrhea and consumption" contracted in the service. The widowed Eliza married Moses Trostle and was widowed a second time.
