Henry was one of five children born to Valentine Pfening and Emilie "Amelia" Eschmann. On 25th Nov 1886 he married Frances Shields and they had three children: Frederic, Henry, Jr. and Paul. As a young man he went to work as a miner in the coal mines of southern Ohio. He worked in the mines his entire life and by the end of his career he was a mine foreman in Kentucky. Henry died of bronchial asthma at the age of 73.
