Allie was the son of Alfred E. and Susan (Porter) Godfrey. He married Eva Leigh Bruce in 1916 and they had nine children: Allie Bruce, Wilma Lee, Gladys Lucille, John Price, Mary Lois, Rachel Maxine, Annie Ruth, Dorothy and David Wilson.

Death Takes Godfrey, 78

Allie Byrd Godfrey, 78, Pisgah Church Community, route 2, Hiddenite, died at 9:15 a.m. at his home. He had been in declining health for one year and critically ill for the past six weeks.
Mr. Godfrey was born April 28, 1893, in Mecklenburg County, a son of the late Susan Porter and Alfred E. Godfrey. He was a member, steward, trustee and lay speaker of Pisgah United Methodist Church and was a retired merchant and farmer. He was a Ancient, Free and Accepted Mason, holding membership in the Stony Point Lodge #593.
Mr. Godfrey was married to the former Eva Bruce on April 19, 1916, who survives. Also surviving are five daughters: Mrs. J. Ralph Hill, route 2, Statesville, Mrs. Mary G. Lax, of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. G. Flake Pharr of Augustus, Ga., Mrs. C. Bayne Alexander of Charlotte, and Mrs. Dorothy Herb of the home; three sons, Allie Bruce Godfrey, route 2, Hiddenite, John P. Godfrey of Lake Norman and Statesville and D. Wilson Godfrey, route 2, Hiddenhite; one sister, Mrs. A. M. Blakely of Charlotte; three brothers, Rev. A. A. Godfrey of Tampa, Fla., R. B. Godfrey of Thomasville, Ga. and L. L. Godfrey of Kannapolis; and 23 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Godfrey will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Pisgah United Methodist Church by Rev. William E. Walker, Rev. Mack McCurdy and Rev. Ben H. Ziegler. burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Nicholson Funeral Home Thursday evening between 7:30 and 9 o'clock and the body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral hour.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Pisgah cemetery fund
