Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1956 to 1967), he played at the second base, third base and shortstop positions with the New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers. He attended high school in Warsaw, Missouri and during this period, he participated in both basketball and baseball. He continued his athletics at Southwest Missouri State University and was a member of two NAIA National Championship teams. He chose to pursue a professional baseball career and was selected by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1951. Following service with the United States Army during the Korean War, Lumpe marked his Major League debut with the Yankees on April 17, 1956. He played in 20 games that year. In 1957, he recorded a .340 batting average in 40 games-played and experienced World Series action. The following season (1958), he was a contributor the the Yankees' world championship. He totaled 12 career World Series games and compiled 6 hits. In 1962, he produced a career-high 193 hits while with the Athleitcs and in 1964, he distinguished himself when he achieved all-star status as a Detroit Tiger. In 1,371 regular season games, he compiled 1,314 hits with a .268 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the banking industry. Lumpe returned to the field one last time to serve as a coach with the Oakland Athletics in 1971. In 1994, he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
