Mary was the daughter of Catherine McDermott and Thomas Kelley, natives of Roscommon, Ireland. Her father was a miner with Phoenixville Iron Works, PA.

In 1886 Mary married William J Waugh who was born in South Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. Mary was the mother of John, George and Elizabeth (Bessie) Waugh. Relatives who remember her said she was an exceptionally beautiful woman and retained such features well into her senior years.

After the death of her husband, she was barely into her twenties with two toddler boys and a new baby girl. She moved her children in with her mother Catherine McDermott Kelley and step-father Michael McNiff, a wire worker with Washburn and Moen Mfg.Co. She then took a job as an operator at one of the Worcester envelope-making companies which she retained for over thirty years. She also became an official of the Fitchburg chapter of the Companions of the Forest, an early conservationist group and ladies' society.

Mary Ellen passed away in April 1943 at the age of 75. Four months earlier, her only grandson, U.S. Army medic David Raymond Waugh, whom she raised, was lost at sea aboard the U.S.S. Coamo in the Atlantic in December, 1942, during World War II.
