88, died Friday, August 30. He was the son of George and Narra Vincent Gayhart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy Jones Gayhart, and his two sisters, Wynona Jones and Joyce Holt. After graduating from Fairfield High School, Mr. Gayhart joined the Navy, serving as a fighter pilot in the Pacific during WWII. Following his discharge he attended the University of Alabama. Upon graduation he accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Energy, and the family moved to Aiken, SC, where they lived for 44 years. Mr. Gayhart was a past Grand Master of Masonic Lodge #156 in Aiken and was also a Knights Templar member. He and his wife returned to Birmingham in 1997. Mr. Gayhart is survived by his daughter, Deborah van Zalingen; two grandchildren, Andrea Noonan (Rusty) and Adam Nabors; one niece, Wynona Holt, and numerous cousins. Johns-Ridout's Elmwood is handling arrangements. Visitation will be Saturday, September 7, from 10 to 11 AM, followed by a brief graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to Homes for Our Troops, 6 Main St., Taunton, MA 02780.
