A Civil War veteran, he first served as a private with Co. H, 32nd Pennsylvania Militia, June 18 - August 1, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis. He then enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia June 18, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). On June 13, 1865, he transferred to Co. G, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, as part of a war-end consolidation, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865. After the war, he served a three-year enlistment with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He married Clara V. Dennison ca. 1877 in Maryland and fathered Lewis R. (b. 06/??/78), Mary E. (b. 12/??/79), Estelle (b. @1880), Florence B. (b. 03/??/82), George (b. 12/??/83), Harry Dennison (b. 06/??/85), Fulton (b. 11/??/87), and Carroll (b. 05/??/89). He retired after many years as a railroad baggage agent and died at his home in York of "sarcoma of neck and jaw (left)."
