Esther M Friedrich was born on 20 August 1899, in Branch County, Michigan, to William Henry and Bertha J. (Hellenberg) Friedrich. She was a graduate of Alma College and did post-graduate work at the University of Michigan. She was a faculty member at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana in the 1940s. In 1947, she was appointed professor of sociology at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She returned to Alma University in 1952 as Dean of Women, a post she held until her retirement in 1965. She later moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, where she died on 7 January 1981, at the age of 81. She was the widow of Francis M. Vreeland, who died in 1943. Her obituary appeared in the Battle Creek Enquirer [MI] on 13 January 1981.
