Television Journalist. After school he worked at a travel agency and started his radio career at a radio station in the Netherlands in 1950. From 1954 on he worked for the NWDR (North-West German Broadcasting Corporation) in Hamburg where he met Karl-Heinz Köpcke. He became broadcaster in german TV in 1961 and five years later Köpcke called him to ARD TV to become newsreader for the german news show "Tagesschau" ("View of the day"). In 1987 he followed Köpcke as head newsreader of the "Tagesschau", a post he held until January 1995 when he was diagnosed with cancer and quit. In February 1995, just three months before his death he outed himself in a magazine interview and shortly thereafter married Carlheinz Faust, who had been his partner since 1955.
