Her birth name was Mary Ethel Harrell. The divorce of her parents was bitter and after the divorce Mary and her mother had nothing further to do with her father, John M. Harrell. Her mother married James H. Thompson, Mary chose to take his last name due to the hard feelings she had for her father and the way he treated her mother. As her middle name she took Penn, her maternal grandmother's maiden name. She was forever after known as Mary Penn Thompson.

Thompson--Friday night, August 11, 1939, at 11 o'clock, at a local infirmary, Miss Mary Penn Thompson. Remains are at the apartments of Finley M. Dorris Company, West End at Twenty-fifth Avenues. Funeral from the chapel Monday morning, August 14, 1939, at 10:30 o'clock. Services conducted by Rev. J. Francis McCloud. Franklin M. Vess, Ferriss C. Pailey, Jim Halman, William P. Finney, W.B. shearon, Dr. L.W. Edwards and Dr. Joe Hibbitts, Jr., will serve as pallbearers. Interment Spring Hill Cemetery.
