Augustus enlisted in the Army at Ft Jay, Governors Island, NY on 4 September 1941.

Pvt Labate volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Pfc Labate jumped into Normandy, France on D-Day, 6 June 1944 and was killed in action that same day.

He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge for Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944
