Former shipping commission merchant in Manhattan, and former president of the New York Maritime Association. As a boy he entered the employment of Richard P. Buck & Company, and rose steadily until he became president of the company. He retired from business when the company dissolved. He died at his home in Brooklyn at age 76. He was survived by son, David, real estate man and former State Assemblyman, and a brother, Daniel Barnes, president of the Seaman's Bank for Savings.
