Second Lieutenant Hamilton was initially assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Company E, with additional duty of S-3 (Training/Operations) for the 2nd Battalion. He was later transferred to HQ Company 2nd Battalion and then to Company D.

Lt Hamilton participated in the D-Day jump into Normandy on 6 June 1944. He was listed in Company D Morning Reports as being seriously wounded on 4 July 1944 and then as having died of his wounds on 5 July 1944.

He was initially interred in the Blosville temporary cemetery in Plot D, Row 3, Grave 59. His remains were repatriated and laid to rest in his home area.
