Melvin "Mel" Curtis Peterson, 84, of Elizabeth Township, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014. He was born March 8, 1930, in McKeesport. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of McKeesport, Youghiogheny Lodge No. 583 Free and Accepted Masons and the Barcey Choir of McKeesport. He was also a member and past president of the McKeesport Jaycees and was past president and secretary of the McKeesport Lions Club with more than 50 years of service. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow from Lions Club International Foundation. Mel retired from the Union National Bank in McKeesport and had previously worked at Westinghouse Federal Credit Union, William Jenkins Corporation, and Butler's Golf Course. He served on the Boards of the McKeesport YMCA and the Auberle Home. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking and was an Army veteran, serving in Japan during the Korean War. He loved to play golf and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mel enjoyed growing flowers. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, LaVauda Jean Dick Peterson; sons, Jeffrey Allen Peterson, of Manassas, Va., and Douglas Richard Peterson, of Oakton, Va.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Gould Peterson; and brothers, Harry E. and George W. Peterson. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at the GILBERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 6028 Smithfield St., Boston, Elizabeth Township. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, in the funeral home chapel. Interment with military honors will follow at the Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills.
