Robert was the son of Abram Banta and Demaris Ledford (aka Ledferd). He reportedly married at the age of 28, but the name of his wife is not yet known. He served in First World War from 3 March 1918 to 11 September 1919, and the Second World War. He commenced his service in WWII as a member of the medical department at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and was sent to Balloon School at Arcadia, California, for training. Death apparently took him will en route to Arcadia. His remains were sent to Greenmount Cemetery to be interred and an upright marble headstone to mark his grave was ordered by Mrs Mabel Miller on 29 May 1944.
