Arthur Matthew Henry Maki, age 89, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday morning, April 28, 2014, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Born February 5, 1925 in Marquette, a son of Matti and Vienno (Tuuri) Maki, Art was raised in Marquette and attended Graveraet High School. He worked at a variety of jobs before entering the US Army in April 1943, serving during World War II, until his honorable discharge in December 1945. Returning to Marquette, he was employed with the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad for eleven years before beginning a 25 year career as a clerk with the US Postal Service. He retired in 1987. His hobbies and special interests included gardening, fishing, hiking, snowshoeing, spending time at his camp in Deerton, a love of cribbage, making bird feeders for family and friends, and an interest in history including World War II, political, and the histories of various governments. He was greatly devoted to his Man Cave in the basement where he could relax, enjoy his beers, and burn wood in his woodstove. In retirement, he and wife, Marian, enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren.

Art is survived by his wife, Marian (Wallenstein) whom he married on September 15, 1951; three daughters, Colleen Maki of Marquette, Susan (Greg Taube) Maki of St. Paul, MN, and Judy (Tom) Smith of Marquette; former son-in-law, Rory O'Loughlin of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren, Ian, Conor (Melanie), and Aila (Andrew Jensen) O'Loughlin, Ashley and Sarah Smith, and Joelle Maki; great-grandchildren, Fiona, Freya, Ciaran, Dubhlainn Arthur, and Gray; brothers, Don (Karen) Maki, William (Elsie) Maki, and Michael (Sheila) Maki all of Marquette; sisters, Lillian Perry of Walnut Creek, CA, Isabelle Maki of Medford, OR, Helen (Lowell) Johnson of Marquette, and Edith (Ronnie) Pariseau of Gwinn; sister-in-law, Dorothy Maki of Marquette; brother-in-law, Larry Lawrence of Big Rapids; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by sisters, Martha and husband, George Niemann, Gerty Lawrence, and Louise and husband, Weldon Ballew; brothers, Arnold, Alfred and wife, Betty, Albert, Raymond and wife, Joan Maki; and brother-in-law, Jack Perry.

Graveside services with veteran's honors will be held at the Park Cemetery on Saturday, June 21, at 11:00 am with Chuck Tooman, Lake Superior Hospice chaplain, officiating. Veteran's honors will be rendered by members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.

Following the cemetery rites, a celebration honoring Art's life will be held at the family home, 2050 Granite Street, Marquette. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette Beautification Committee, P.O. Box 334, Marquette, MI 49855.
