Obituary of Mary "Molly" McGowan Neihardt from newspaper of Orland, Indiana, 24 Nov 1913

Mary M. McGowan, daughter of Samuel and Susanna McGowan, was born December 27, 1840 in Mahoning co, Ohio. Aged 72 years, 10 months and 24 days. [date of death being 21 Nov 1913]
She was the youngest of a family of nine [sic - 10] children, only two of whom remain, Mrs. Betsey Davis of Edon, OH, who is aged 87 years, and Mr. Fred H. McGowan of Safford, Arizona.
Her father's family moved to Orland when she was but 13 years old.
Her father was very active in the "underground R.R." of slavery times, using the Prairie Schooner he moved here with to carry the fugitive slaves to the next station.
As a child she carried provisions to the colored women and children and tried to teach the girls to read who were secreted at this station.
Her school days were spent in Orland Academy, among her teachers were Professors Gibson, Bernard and Poole. For a number of years she taught school in Indiana and Ohio.
October 27, 1861 she was untied in marriage to Mr. Geo. W. Neihardt, better know as Professor Neihardt. For one year immediately following this marriage she was Professor Neihardt's assistant in school at West Unity, Ohio.
To Mr. and Mrs. Neihardt have been born 5 children, Dr. S. Emmett of S. Bordman, Michigan, Dora N. Crosby of Pollard, Oregon, G. W. Jr. of Orland, Mable A. Lyon of Rice Lake, WI, and Jonas J. of South Boarman, Michigan.
Mrs. Neihardt united with the Baptist Church of Orland in the 70's with which church she has always remained a faithful member. She has ever been an active participant in all good works for the community. She was an active member of the Good Templars, of the Grange and the Eastern Stars.
Naturally of a quiet, retiring nature, she was a great home lover, and make much of her home. Her neighbors and friends knew her as a constant and dependable friend. She was a lover of choice literature of which she was a constant reader.
She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, 5 children, two sisters [sic -1 sister and 1 brother], 26 grand children and many nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at her late residence in Orland Saturday, Nov 22, services conducted by Rev E. W. Gray of the Congregational Church, where she has attended late years, burial at Green Lawn Cemetery. The Eastern Stars attended in a body and conducted services at the grave.
