When Ted was about a year old, his father moved his family from Nebraska to Viola, Idaho, where they remained until about 1917 when they moved to Spokane, Washington. At the age of about ten, Ted worked in Spokane, Washington as a newsboy, while his father was away working in Oregon. Following his father's early death in 1927, Ted lived with his older brother, Charles, in Portland, Oregon, where he worked as cook. At some point, which was most likely before his marriage, Ted went to Idaho and worked there as a coal miner.
In 1932, Ted married Alice Lucretia Wellin (1916-1985), the daughter of Wilhelm Percy Wellin (1895-1977) and Lois Beatrice Agee (1897-1983), in Portland, Oregon. Ted and Alice had three daughters together before their divorce in about 1944: Gloria Lois Lapham, Margaret Ann Lapham, and Jacqueline Kay Lapham.
During his marriage to Alice, Ted was employed as a bus driver in Portland, Oregon, a profession he worked in for many years. Towards the end of his life, Ted worked as a home builder in Oregon. He passed away in 1955 from heart failure resulting from an enlarged heart.
