Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1832 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was serving as an officer in the Regular Army Topographical Engineers when the Civil War began. Appointed as a Colonel of Volunteers, he was given command of the 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He led the unit through the Spring 1862 Penninsular Campaign, and was captured with over 400 of his men at the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill. Upon his exchange he was recalled back to the Regular Army, and served first as a Major and Chief of Topographical Engineers of the Department of the Ohio, then as Lieutenant Colonel and Chief Engineer for the same department. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He remained in the Regular Army after the war, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1880.
