Major League Baseball Player. The left-handed batter was for a time one of the top leadoff batters in the American League. In his rookie season, 1939, with the Detroit Tigers, he hit .311, had 33 doubles and 14 triples and stole 20 bases in 24 attempts. He also led the American League outfielders in putouts. The following year he batted .340, had 39 doubles and led the league with 200 hits and 19 triples. In the 1940 World Series he hit .304 and scored five runs, but the Tigers lost to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games. He served in the military three years (1943 to 1945). Upon his return he got off to a .198 start and was dealt to the Philadelphia Athletics on May 18, 1946 for third baseman George Kell. McCosky still wound up batting .318 for the season. Back problems forced him out of the entire 1949 season. Washington's Connie Marrero had to be content with a one-hitter and a 2-1 victory after McCosky belted a homer in the fourth inning on April 26, 1951. That year he was sold to the Reds on May 4 and then in turn to the Cleveland Indians on July 21. His 11-year career totals were .312 with 1,301 hits, 214 doubles, 71 triples and 24 homers.
