Wife of Frank Barston Allie, son of Samuel Allie and Gussie Mumford.

Beatrice Claire Monsamie Allie, who we called Claire, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 18, 1922, to loving parents Beatrice Burns Monsamie and William Monsamie. She had one younger sister, Wilma, who pre-deceased her in 2003. The Burnses and Monsamies were members of St. Matthew’s Eposcopal Church from the time that they moved to Detroit in 1892.

Claire graduated from Detroit Northern High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in 1945 and worked as a social worker for the City of Detroit. In October of 1948, she married Frank B. Allie. Together they loved and raised four children, Frank M. Allie, Camilla Allie Prince Colthurst, Karl Allie (Doris), and Francesca Allie Ferguson. Claire had nine grandchildren: Karla, Susan, Wendy, Yolanda, Laura, A’Ashahla, Natashah, Aleyciuss, and Karl; eleven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews; Alethia, Graham, Kenneth (Lora), Wesley, and Marc; and cousins Edna, Burns, Earl, and Betty, many younger cousins, and hosts of friends.

Claire returned to Wayne State University to obtain her teaching certification and began teaching in the Detroit Public Schools in 1956. She taught school in St. Louis, Missouri from 1960 until 1965 when Frank’s work responsibilities took the family there. A transfer in 1965 brought the family back to Detroit where Claire continued to work with the Detroit Public Schools until she retired in 1989. Throughout her life she continued to tutor and to encourage children to educate themselves. She always took classes to the museums around St. Louis and Detroit.

Claire loved to travel, to explore other cultures, to read, and to visit museums. Her last trip in June 2014 included tours of the Native American Museum at the Smithsonian and of the White House. Other favorite trips were to the Mediterranean, Egypt, Venezuela, China, and Singapore. Claire was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and of Charms, Inc. She was a lover of beautiful things, including jewelry and clothing and always the color red.

Claire was loved and will be missed but, even more, she will be remembered.
