Medical Pioneer. An epidemiologist, he isolated the viruses that caused Influenza A in 1934 and Influenza B in 1940. He also directed the trials of the Salk vaccine, the first that was successful against polio. When he graduated high school in 1917 in a western Pennsylvania steel town, the world was suffering 'La Grippe' of a pandemic that stole more than 50 million lives. His mother and sister-in-law engaged in nursing and so Tommy had been drafted to assist in the local hospital in New Castle, Pa. It changed the course of his life.
