Roman Catholic Cardinal. Venetian by birth, Giuseppe Callegari came from a well off family belonging to the small Venetian aristocracy. Entering the Patriarchal Seminary of Venice, he was ordained priest in his native city in March 1864. Appointed to the teaching staff of the named seminary, lecturing among others moral theology, he was appointed counselor of the ecclesiastical tribunal in 1878 and prosynodal examiner of the archdiocese. A regular contributor to 'Il Veneto Cattolico', Callegari was named bishop of Treviso at the early age of thirty eight, receiving his episcopal consecration in Venice from its patriarch in March 1880. Named assistant to pontifical throne on August 24, 1882, he was transferred to see of Padua, retaining the administration of Treviso until the appointment of Msgr. Giuseppe Apollonio as his successor. Declining the patriarchal see of Venice in 1892, recommending instead his close friend Msgr. Giuseppe Sarto, bishop of Mantua, who was eventually named patriarch in June of the following year, Callegari acted as president of the 'Società Scientifica dei Cattolici Italiani'. When Cardinal Sarto was elected Pope in 1903, assuming the named of Pius X, in his first conclave in November that year, he created him cardinal along with Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta with the title of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, deaconry elevated pro illa vice to title. A lengthy illness brought his end less than three years later in Padua.
