Professional Basketball Player. For seventeen seasons (1973 until 1990), he was a center and power forward in the American and National Basketball Associations with the San Diego Conquistadors, Kentucky Colonels, Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, Portland Trailblazers and San Antonio Spurs. He attended Desha Central High School in Arkansas, where he made his first impression on the court, and continued his athletics at Albany State University in Georgia. Selected by Philadelphia during the 1973 NBA Draft, he signed with San Diego of the ABA. During the 1974-1975 season, he achieved all-star status and produced a career-high 1,187 points with 1,095 rebounds. During his years with the 76ers, Jones contributed to three Philadelphia squads which reached the NBA Finals (1977, 1980 and 1982). He was acquired by Houston as compensation, the result of Moses Malone being traded to Philadelphia. During Jones' final season (1989-1990), while with the Spurs, he mentored a young David Robinson. In 1,299 regular-season ABA and NBA games, Jones earned placement in a rare class of players (to exceed both 10,000 points and rebounds) with 10,241 points and 10,685 total rebounds. He was one of four brothers (Wil Jones, Major Jones and Charles Jones) to play professional basketball. He died suddenly from a heart attack while playing golf.
