Private Weitz was a member of Battery A, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On May 25, 1969, he was killed while fighting the enemy in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Killed as the result of NVA mortar rounds hitting a Marine 88mm mortar ammo dump, causing explosions and fires. Killed in the same action or later dying of wounds suffered in that action were: 1LT John W. Abbott, Hammond, Indiana; 2LT Timothy M. O'Neill, St. Louis, Missouri; CPL Gary D. Marines on 28 June 1968 at the Boston Recuriting Office. He arrived in Vietnam 9 May 1969 and died while participating in Operation Viginia Ridge.
