John H. Carey, Chief Warrant Officer 4 (U.S.A., Ret.) of Idaho Falls, passed away at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center on Thursday, March 22, 2012. John was born Aug. 24, 1938, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Claude Thomas Carey and Gladys Leola Gurwey Carey. He married Shirley June Douglas on May 28, 1975, in Columbus, Ga. He resided in Idaho Falls for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army for 33 years, which included two tours in Vietnam; Beirut, Lebanon; Cairo, Egypt; South Korea; and various assignments in the USA. During his military service, he was awarded two Bronze Stars, The Legion of Merit and a Joint Service Commendation Medal. He worked seven years with the Department of Energy as a counterintelligence officer at the Idaho National Laboratory. John was a 50-year member of the Masons. He was an active member of the Republican Party and a member of the Baptist Church.

John enjoyed playing card games and staying in contact with his friends around the world.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Carey of Idaho Falls; sons, Anthony (Sandy) Daw of Green Cove, Ill., Byron (Karen) Daw of Clayton, N.C., and Alan Daw of Idaho Falls; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and others who he considered family, Ken and Gloria Gordon of Idaho Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Idaho Foodbank. Wood Funeral Home.
