Captain Sanders was a member of the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron at Nakhon Phanom Airfield, Thailand. On June 30, 1970, he was the pilot of a North American Rockwell Bronco (OV10-A) on a mission southeast of Khe Sanh, when his aircraft was shot down just inside Laos. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
