Funeral Services For Mrs. Callahan To Be On Saturday Mrs. Bettie J. Callahan, 46, wife of Frank S. Callahan Jr., died at 4:30 a.m. today at Jackson Madison County General Hospital where she had been a patient since July 29. Born in Oklahoma City, Okla., she graduated from Classen High School there. While in Classen, she received the four-year award as an outstanding speech and drama pupil and was chosen to represent the school in state and national forensic contests. Mrs. Callahan studied speech and drama at Lindenwood College. St. Charles, Mo., for a year, then attended the University of Oklahoma, from which she received an A. B. degree. While there, she was a member of Gama Phi Beta. Upon graduation, she was given a scholarship to Northwestern University, Evanston, HI., where she received her Master's degree in Speech and Hearing. During World War II, from September 1944 to August 1946, she was a speech correctionist for the Gorden General Hospital, an Army hearing center for wounded veterans. She then served nine months as a speech correctionist at Indiana State Teachers College. She was married to Mr. Callahan on April 6, 1947, and moved to Jackson. He is an engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. Upon moving to Jackson, she began work with those handicapped by speech or hearing difficulties in West Tennessee as a speech therapist for the State. Mrs. Callahan served as a speech and hearing consultant for the West State. She was a speech therapist for the Jackson city schools for two periods, from September 1949 through June 1950 and from August 1955 to June 1961. Before her illness, she worked three years as a speech therapist for the West Tennessee Hearing and Speech Center at Jackson. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and a former president of its Tri Mu Sunday school class. She was active in Girl Scout work, serving as a scout leader for Troop 162 from 1960-1964. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Miss Linda Callahan and Miss Kay Callahan; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. McClelland of Oklahoma City; a brother, A. Marwood McClelland of Forth Worth, Tex.; and a sister, Mrs. Roger Pearson of Bossier City, La. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of First Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Y. Horton, pastor, officiating. Her body will be returned to Oklahoma City for burial in Rose Hill cemetery. Active pallbearers here will be Smiley F. Keaton, Dr. E. M. Spence, Charles T. Stanfill, Bruce Bynum, Walter Knowles, A. P. Brazelton of Paducah, Ky., and R. T. Hosmon. Honorary pallbearers will be district employees of TVA and Dr. Allen Williams, Dr. Robert Tucker, Dr. Billy Crook, Dr. Hudson Brooks, and Dr. Jack Douglass. The family stated today that memorials may be sent to the Bettie Callahan Memorial Fund, which is being established at the West Tennessee Hearing and Speech Center. The body is at Lanier Funeral Home.
