Louise Schulte Nichols, of La Jolla, passed away on April 16, 2007. Louise was born July 10, 1913, in Casper, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Edward J. and Susan Webel Schulte, descendants of pioneer Wyoming families. Louise graduated from UCLA in 1936, a rare accomplishment for a young woman of her generation. While at college, she joined the PHI MU Fraternity. When she married Ensign Richard Eugene Nichols on June 20, 1936, in San Diego, California, Louise became a Navy Wife taking on the demanding roles of wife and mother to two young children while her husband served aboard submarines during World War II. After the war, whenever her husband was transferred to a new port--New London, Key West, Los Angeles, Peru, Washington, D.C., Newport--Louise made a home for her family, supported her husband in his naval career, and developed friendships that continued the rest of her life. After her husband's retirement from the Navy, they retired first to Seattle, Washington, and moved permanently to San Diego in 1975. Her last years were spent traveling the rest of the world where they had not been stationed and enjoying their grandchildren. She is survived by her two children Richard Nichols and Susie Cook, daughter-in-law Lois Nichols, son-in-law James Cook, and two grandchildren Jennifer and Christopher. Louise, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and member of the Greatest Generation, was buried at El Camino Memorial Park. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
