John D. Caley was interred here in Elmwood Cemetery on March 7, 1908 according to the Christ Church Episcopal Churchyard (New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey) burial records. The timing of the interment suggests that the date of death was in March, 1908.

Thanks to Soucie for the following (John Caley was her great grandfather):

My records indicate that his middle initial is (H.) as shown in the New Brunswick city directory and his obituary, so I do find it curious that the headstone is different. He died of tuberculosis on March 4, 1908 at the age of 23 leaving behind his wife the former Edna P. Godwin of New Brunswick and a son George H. Caley.

Based on the foregoing information from Soucie, it is apparent that the middle initial "D" in the church records is a typographical error.
