Actress. She made a great impression on the American stage during her more-than fifty-year career. She will perhaps be best remembered for playing 'Myra Bruhl' in the Broadway play "Deathtrap" (1978 to 1982). She earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for a time as "Most durable actress" with her 1,809 performances as 'Myra Bruhl'. Born of Russian-Jewish descent (paternal), her father was author, playwright and critic Gilbert Seldes, her uncle was journalist George Seldes, Marian's mother was from a wealthy New York family. She initially trained as a dancer at the School of American Ballet, prior to focusing on acting. She studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and began her lengthy association with Broadway in the production of "Medea" (1947 to 1948). During the course of her career, she received a Tony Award for "A Delicate Balance" (1967) and earned Tony Award nominations with "Father's Day" (1971), "Deathtrap" (1978), "Ring Round the Moon" (1999) and "Dinner at Eight" (2003). In addition, she appeared in a wide range of TV programs from the 1950s into the 2000s, as well as motion pictures. She may be best known to movie audiences for playing 'Herodias' in the film "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965). For more-than twenty-years, she taught at the Theater Center of the Juilliard School and among her students were Robin Williams, Christopher Reeve, William Hurt and Kevin Spacey.
