Truro born actor and playwright.Foote inherited a fortune as a young man from an uncle who was murdered by another uncle. He studied at Worcester and Oxford, leaving before taking his degree although his standard of classical knowledge was high. He studied law and frequented coffee houses in London, becoming an outstanding mimic. In 1744 he became an actor, and invented the nonsense text 'Grand Panjandrum' as a way of testing the memory of the actor Charles Macklin (qv). He was buried in Poets Corner, below the statue of Addison, without a marker.
