Appointed as the first Benedictine Archabbot of the United States, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while in Cleveland during a meeting of the Propagation of the Faith, passing away a month later at St. Francis Hospital in his native Pittsburgh due to various complications including diseases related to a severe cold caught which he caught on the previous Christmas period. His 1915 publication "Manual for Episcopal Ceremonies", attracted in his days a considerable attention.
