US Congressman. A member of the Republican and later Democratic Parties, he represented New York's 25th Congressional District from 1971 until 1973 and New York's 23rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1973 until 1977 and 1979 until 1983. He attended Colgate University, where he studied Classical Greek and was an exceptional athlete who participated in hockey, tennis and boxing. After graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army and was stationed in the European Theater as an infantry man during World War II. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and his experience earned him the Bronze Star. Following his return home, he worked in the insurance industry and later began his career in politics, when he was elected mayor of his hometown, Irvington, New York. During his tenure in Congress, Peyser prioritized efforts to increase funding for student and update pension programs. After leaving Washington, he served as a consultant for investment companies. He died of complications from Parkinson's disease.
