CHARLES J. HESSEL (d. 1960)

C.J. Hessel, 77, of Francis Creek died shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday at his home. He had been ailing for the past three years. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced Monday by the Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville.

Mr. Hessel was born March 26, 1882, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hessel Sr. of Francis Creek. He lived in the village all his life. He graduated from University of Wisconsin Short Course in 1902 and went into businessin the village in 1905, opening the Hessel restaurant and bowling alleys. His chicken dinners, family style, became known throughout Wisconsin and he remained in business 52 years, retiring two years ago because of his health. He married the former Laura Kassa of Centerville in 1906. Two years ago he retired as postmaster, a job he had filled for more than 40 years. He was a director of the State Bank of Francis Creek for 25 years, member of the Knights of Columbus, of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge and the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Mrs. Larry Axel of Francis Creek; two sons, Paul of Two Rivers and Richard of North Fond du Lac; brother, Reinhart of Manitowoc; sister Miss Theresa of Francis Creek; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A son Gardy preceded him in death four years ago.
