Enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He trained in the PT-22. His class was shipped out to flight transports over the hump from Burma, but he was appointed as a flight instructor, instead. He enjoyed flying the B-25. He taught aerobatics in the AT-6 and trained others in the B-17, the "Flying Fortress."

Jerry, Helen and his sister, Lois changed their name from Schlappi to Stevens after he began practicing optometry. They chose the name after cousins, named Stevens, who were serving as missionary doctors in China.
