Obituary from The Monroe Evening Times Tuesday, September 3, 1935. Mrs. Sarah Hare, aged 88, native of Sylvester Township, Green County, passed away at 5:50 Sunday afternoon in her home, 719 Twenty-second Avenue. She had been ill only two weeks and had been unusually active up to the time of her illness. She made her own garden and went on occasional trips downtown until being taken ill. Sarah Hammon was the daughter of Jacob and Eliza Hammon, pioneer residents of Green county who came here from Indiana. Sarah was born in Sylvester September 11, 1846 and next Wednesday would have celebrated her 89th birthday anniversary. She was married to Alvah E. Hare Nov. 13, 1866. They spent one year in Albany and then moved to Mt. Pleasant township where they lived on a farm three years before moving to Monticello. There they operated the Monticello House, a hotel, two and a half years. They resumed farming in 1876 when they purchased a farm in Washington township where they lived until moving to Monroe Jan 6, 1893. Since coming to Monroe they resided in the same house. Mr. Hare, a Civil War soldier and a member of Co. A., 40th Wisconsin volunteer infantry, died here Jan. 6, 1916. The two children are Mrs. Clifford Holloway, Winslow, and Loren L. Hare, Monroe. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ida Berryman, Monroe, and one brother, Amos Hammon, Monroe. Funeral rites will be held at 2 Wednesday afternoon in the Shriner-Neushwander funeral home. Rev. T. S. Beavin, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
