Upham, a Native-American who grew up in south Seattle as a member of the Blackfoot Tribe, began her career at the age of thirteen when she joined the Red Eagle Soaring community theater group and by the following year, she was writing and directing short skits and performing on tours throughout the northwest. She landed her first film role as Mrs. Blue Cloud in 'Skins' (2002) and went on to appear in other films, such as 'Frozen River' (2008, for which she received several acting awards and nominations), 'The Dry Land' (2010), 'Django Unchained' (2012), 'August: Osage County' (2013) and 'Cake' (2014). She also appeared in several made-for-television movies and TV shows, such as 'Skinwalkers', 'Dreamkeepers', 'Edge of America', 'Big Love' and 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'. She was the subject of a documentary about her career and life as an actress and artist. Upham, who had been missing since October 5th, and had suffered from mental health issues in the past, was found dead near a river in Washington state.
