Leonard Bates Wells was the son of Lewis Wells, Jr. and his wife, Grace Taylor.
From 7 Aug 1862 to 5 Aug 1865 during the United States Civil War, Leonard Bates Wells served in the 81st Illinois Infantry, Company A.
According to a 1953 letter written by his daughter, Rezilia, Leonard's windpipe was severed during the 22 May 1863 Union Army charge at the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The drummer boy, Hancy Young, stopped the bleeding and saved Leonard's life.
