US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1967 until 1975. He achieved All State status in hockey while attending La Salle Academy in Rhode Island and participated in track at Providence College. He attained his law degree from Catholic University Columbus School of Law in Washington and practiced in his native Rhode Island. He entered the political arena, when he was elected to and served in the Rhode Island General Assembly from 1960 until 1967. He went on to win a special election to fill the vacancy following the death of US Congressman John E. Fogarty. During the course of his career, he became known for his personable approach to people whether they were Democrats or Republicans. After his Congressional tenure, he was appointed by President Ford to serve on the Federal Election Commission (1975 until 1981).
