dear mother, Mary (LaBruzzo) Scavuzzo, (88), peacefully entered heaven on October 19th, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Mom was born on July 12th 1926 to Nick and Mamie (Lascuola) LaBruzzo, the fourth of five children. She was a very intelligent woman, and after graduating from St. Aloysius High School, was financially unable to accept a scholarship to St. Teresa's Academy. During World War II, mom worked for Frequency Measuring Service where she performed quality assurance on the quartz crystals used in radio equipment supplied to our armed forces. Later in life she worked for Rothchild's Department Store and the Kansas CIty Redevelopment Authority. When she married Edward Scavuzzo in 1977, she began working with him at Ambassador Meats. Mom was the happiest when she was in the kitchen, and had the almost magical ability to pull together regal feasts with random items out of the freezer, refrigerator and cabinets. She enjoyed watching her family enjoy the meals she lovingly prepared. Her sons-in-law were at first astounded by the number of courses served at her dining table. When Italian cookies were needed for any occasion, she was always offering her baking skills. Her almond slice cookies were the best. She also contributed her delicious pineapple upside down cake to the annual St. Joseph Table at Anthony's Restaurant. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward Scavuzzo; siblings and in-laws Vito and Jeanette LaBruzzo, Angeline and Don Sirna, Sarah and Joseph Gargotta, and Jack LaBruzzo, great grandson Austin Tyler McClure, and brother-in-law Jack Pisciotta. She is survived by her children Andrew Barresi (Larry Summers), Jeanne Townsend (Tom), and Anita Mathews (Rusty); grandchildren Marra McClure (Michael), Lauren Owsley Townsend (Sarah), Garrad Mathews, and Alyson Martin (Daniel); great grandchildren Harper Michelle McClure, Madison Jean McClure, Ezra Jae Hargrave, Malachi Rion Hargrave, and Cora Lee Faythe Hargrave; sisters-in-law Shirley LaBruzzo, Mary Pisciotta, and Teresa Armato (Peter); first husband Leo Barresi (Maggie), and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Mom missed her brothers and sisters very much, and is now celebrating with them and their parents in heaven. We would like to thank Dr. Andrea Arvan and Monique Bullock of Kansas City Internal Medicine for their expertise and attention, the residents and staff of Benton House in Lee's Summit for the love, companionship, and care shown to mom, and the staffs of Crossroads Hospice and John Knox Village-Village House for keeping mom comfortable during her final days. She was loved by all who knew her. Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 23rd at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1800 SW State Rte. 150, Lee's Summit, MO 64082, with visitation beginning at 9am. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd, KCMO 64138.
